Cargo space
Both rear seats can be folded down to provide a flat expanded cargo area. Extra storage space for things like tools and charging cables is located under the deck board.
VEHICLE DYNAMICS
e-Subaru Global Platform
A BEV-dedicated platform has been adopted to maximise performance capable only of a BEV. The e-Subaru Global Platform characteristics achieve optimal ride comfort, stability and controllability at high levels.
Starting with the power core, the vehicle integrates a high-capacity battery, maximizing the installation area to enhance its overall capacity. Placed flat underneath the vehicle floor, this arrangement achieves a dual purpose: a low centre of gravity for improved stability and an efficient spatial layout.
Moreover, the high-efficiency power unit features a compact e-Axle with integrated mechatronics, contributing to a layout exclusive to BEVs. This, in turn, enables the vehicle's electric All-Wheel Drive functionality, controlled independently at the front and rear via standalone motors.
The vehicle has a high strength yet lightweight body. The reinforcement between the battery case and body frames increases body torsional rigidity by 30 per cent (compared to the Subaru Forester), helping ensure safety, particularly in worst-case collision scenarios.
In addition, the ideal chassis design for BEV specifications leverages a longer wheelbase not only to optimise interior space but also to elevate handling performance.
BEV Battery
Solterra features a high-capacity 71.4kWh battery. Increased output supports enhanced drive power performance, while a water-cooled thermal management system maintains optimal battery temperature consistently. This helps to promote reliable battery performance despite varying ambient temperatures or loads, such as during high-speed driving or DC charging.
Additionally, stability in extremely low temperatures and reduced charging times are achieved through the battery heater.
With the battery positioned under the floor, Solterra achieves a lower centre of gravity than ICE/HEV vehicles.
Battery cooling system
The coolant-based system is seamlessly integrated into the battery structure, helping ensure uniform cooling across each cell with optimised coolant flows. To manage the heightened capacity and output of the battery cells, the coolant passes through a refrigerant unit, mirroring the one in the passenger cabin air conditioning system, thus maintaining stable coolant temperatures. This design enables consistent battery output even under high-load conditions, such as repeated transitions between high-speed driving and rapid charging.
Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Solterra introduces a new era of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive due to its completely new powertrain.
For decades, Subaru engineers have been laser focused on developing vehicles which are not only safe but also fun to drive while still maintaining that lower centre of gravity for optimal balance and control. The way a vehicle drives, and handles has always been paramount for Subaru and that promise does not sway with Solterra.
But now, Subaru's renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and design philosophy of low centre of gravity has been brought to an all-electric Subaru SUV. The powertrain may be different, but Subaru's design philosophy remains. The Solterra still feels authentically like a Subaru.
Suspension
The Solterra suspension system is built on decades of experience in the design and development of low centre of gravity Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive vehicles.
The suspension system has been developed to suit the performance requirements of a BEV platform. e –Subaru Global Platform characteristics have been leveraged to achieve ride comfort, stability, and controllability at high levels.
Rigidity surrounding the front/rear suspension has been increased, to offer optimal stability, controllability, and ride comfort.
The battery has been designed as a part of the vehicle body frame to enhance body rigidity and disperse resonance through the newly developed e-Axle and suspension system.
Front suspension
The same Macpherson strut layout used in other Subaru models is utilised for the front suspension.
Shock absorber damping force settings achieve high stability, controllability, and ride comfort, from high to low frequency, without any electronically or frequency response-controlled devices.
The coil spring constant has also been optimised for Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
The stabilizer is made from highly responsive hollow material, have increased support bush span and links to the front strut and rear lower arm further reducing body roll. The stabilizer reaction force improves vehicle steering line tracing performance.
Rear suspension
At the rear, a double wishbone design uses an independent coil spring and damper. The geometry has been optimised to support the body frame of the exclusive BEV platform and pitch position changes during acceleration have been suppressed.
Steering
Subaru have continued with their key philosophy of the driver being in tune with the vehicle's dynamic behaviour through direct feedback via a mechanical link to the wheels.
The steering shaft has been designed to provide positive feel and feedback through the steering wheel while driving.
Electric steering assist characteristics change according to the vehicle speed. Achieving a light feel at low speed and progressively responsive feel at higher speeds.
Brakes
The Solterra boasts an innovative braking system, the electronically controlled Active Hydro Booster(AHB-G) unit.
This system seamlessly integrates regenerative braking with hydraulic pressure, ensuring optimal performance and control. By utilising an on-demand hydraulic pressurization system with a gear pump, the AHB-G unit achieves a harmonious balance between the brake and accelerator pedals, enhancing the vehicle's controllability during braking manoeuvres.
At the core of the AHB-G's functionality lies its sophisticated sensor technology, which detects brake pedal pressure and translates it into a calculated braking control force. This calculated force is then utilised to coordinate the output of both regenerative braking force from the electric motors and hydraulic pressure braking force. Such coordination not only enhances overall braking performance but also improves power efficiency, contributing to the overall driving experience.
The Solterra's brake system independently controls hydraulic pressure for each wheel, enhancing stability and maximizing regenerative braking. This control, facilitated by a brake actuator unit, integrates ABS, VDC, and LSD operations, improving safety and performance in diverse driving conditions
Regenerative braking
Maximum regenerative braking at 0.15G can be accessed via a switch known as S Pedal Drive, located on the centre console. When this switch is engaged, and the accelerator pedal is fully released maximum regenerative braking of up to 0.15G is applied. This remains engaged until it is switched off. S Pedal does not operate when the battery is almost fully charged, or the battery temperate when regenerative braking is restricted.
A number of regenerative braking levels can be selected using the steering wheel paddles, allowing the driver to tailor the amount of regenerative braking or vehicle coasting to best suit their preferences.
DRIVING PERFORMANCE
The natural characteristics of BEVs have been combined with Subaru's legendary features to elevate the driving experience.
Dual Mode X-Mode
Dual mode X-Mode with added new Grip Control function is made available for both Solterra variants. The two modes available are ‘Snow/Dirt' and ‘Deep Snow/Mud' and can be activated with a press of a button:
Working in conjunction with Subaru's legendary all-wheel drive system, the purpose of X-Mode is to increase traction and control under difficult road conditions.
Grip Control (new to Subaru)
The Grip Control function of X-Mode is only operational when X-Mode is active. It works like cruise control at low speeds, designed to maintain a constant speed of approximately 2-10 km/h in steps of 2 km/hr to prevent slipping on rough roads, on uphill or flat roads. This function helps the driver to concentrate on steering when traversing rough roads.
Drive Mode
Owners can select from three acceleration characteristic models, Power, Normal and Eco.
BODY STRUCTURE
To deliver a high strength platform for vehicle stability and high collision safety and to reduce weight, hot stamped steel of varying tensile strengths has been used for the main parts of the vehicle frame.
Front ring frame structure
The body structure around the front suspension attachment points is engineered for heightened rigidity, aimed at reducing flex or movement that could alter suspension geometry. Additionally, the front cowl panel, constructed in a box section and connected to the top of the strut towers, serves to further minimise any potential movement of the strut top mounting point.
Maintaining the integrity of the suspension geometry is crucial for preserving the optimal tire contact footprint, thereby ensuring maximum grip, especially under the influence of dynamic road forces.
Rear frame structure
Body rigidity around the rear suspension has been strengthened without impacting on luggage compartment space.
Battery case structure
To protect the high voltage battery that powers the vehicle, the frame surrounding the battery has been reinforced, to reduce impact force transfer and absorb the shock to the battery in the event of a vehicle impact. This is especially important in a side impact due to shorter energy impact absorption zone.
The battery structure also has played another role in contributing to the overall rigidity of the body structure and reinforcing the suspension attachment points.
AERODYNAMICS
Multiple factors have been considered when designing the all-new Subaru Solterra to contribute towards achieving optimal aerodynamic performance and ample cruising range.
Firstly, a lower grille shutter that decreased passing air resistance and helps cooling performance has been utilised.
Air curtains (front bumper corner) have also been adopted deep within the difference in level in the front bumper corners to reduce wind separation and enable stable airflow to the rear.
The angle of inclination from the roof to the back window helps ensure upper and lower airflow is ideally merged.
Additionally, a duck tail spoiler, tapered side body surface and diffuser improve rectification effect and help enhance aerodynamic performance.
SAFETY
Awarded with a five-star ANCAP rating, Solterra continues Subaru's design philosophy of safety front of mind, and importantly supports its safety vision of working towards zero fatal accidents in a Subaru vehicle by the year 20308.
As with all Subaru models, the Solterra features a host of Primary, Active, Preventative and Protective Safety features to help keep the driver and occupants safe on the road.
Solterra is equipped with Subaru Safety Sense, a preventative safety system that provides, Pre-Collision System, Emergency Steering Assist, Emergency Driving Stop System, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Low-speed Acceleration Suppression, Road Sign Assist and Speed Limiter.
Both Solterra variants also feature Vision Assist which makes available, Adaptive High-Beam System, Blind Sport Monitor (BSM), Front Parking Sensors, Parking Support Brake, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear parking sensors, Safe Exit Assist and Panoramic 360 Degree View Monitor. Solterra AWD Touring exclusively features Advanced Park Assist9.
Advanced Park Assist enhances parking safety and efficiency by providing real-time assistance during parking manoeuvres. By offering a bird's eye view of blind spots and the target parking space, this system guides users through displays and alerts, facilitating changing the shift position and operating the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, and brake pedal for a smoother parking or exiting experience.
In addition, all Solterra vehicles feature the innovative Driver Monitoring System10, which is a camera that intelligently monitors the driver for signs of fatigue or lack of awareness. If the driver is determined to not be paying attention to the road an audio alert will sound and a message will be displayed.
